Based in Portugal, Flower Farm & Floral Design Studio FLO grows their own flowers and works exclusively with seasonal blooms to ensure the highest quality and sustainability. The Studio's creative process is uniquely tailored to each wedding, as they grow almost every variety of flower specifically for the occasion. FLO focuses their design style on creating timeless floral arrangements inspired by the most fundamental and connecting element of all—nature.
Tell us about your business!
We are FLO, a Flower Farm & Floral Design Studio based in Portugal, and we're a family business. I’m Madalena, and I lead the creativity and floral design projects, while Duarte is the real farmer, growing all the flowers for our couples. Together, we craft bespoke floral experiences — from seed to vase.
What makes us unique is our process. Alongside our clients, we handpick the flower varieties tailored to their vision, we grow these blooms on our farm, carefully nurturing them until the day they are harvested for the wedding.
Our approach blends nature's raw beauty with thoughtful design, offering our clients with the freshest seasonal flowers. Each creation is a reflection of the couple's unique story, the essence of the venue, and the season in which they celebrate.
What would you like couples to know about your business?
At FLO, we grow 90% of the flowers we use, ensuring exclusivity, authenticity, and a deep connection to seasonality. We are deeply committed to sustainability and regeneration, as it is at the heart of everything we do. We embrace a truly cyclical approach — after each wedding, we collect the used flowers, transform them into compost, and return that to our soil. This process means that the flowers from one season's celebrations will, quite literally, help grow the next.
We work with seasonal flowers not only to honor nature's rhythm but to evoke a genuine sense of place and time. Our designs capture the beauty of each season, creating atmospheres that feel organically elegant. And we definitely have fun along the way!
Do you travel for weddings?
Absolutely. However, it is essential for us to stay true to our concept — sourcing locally and sustainably. When we travel, we seek out regions with strong local flower farm communities, ensuring we can work with the finest seasonal blooms native to each destination. This allows us to maintain the quality and integrity of our designs while celebrating the natural beauty of the location.
How would you describe your style?
I would say our style is both naturalistic and organic, as it is sculptural and timeless. Deeply moved by nature, its wilderness, and seasonality, we approach each wedding as if curating a garden — a place where structure and spontaneity coexist. The result is an immersive experience, a garden where guests don’t just witness beauty but feel truly enveloped by it.
Tell us about your favourite design/installation!
If I had to choose, I would say the tablescape is my favourite. I love how it serves a dual purpose on the wedding day. On one hand, it has the ability to fill a room, creating a unique "wow" moment for guests when they first see it. On the other hand, it’s the floral design that guests tend to be most captivated by. Since they are seated at the tables for a minimum of two hours, I like to think of our design as a companion throughout the evening. With so many details and hidden layers, there’s always something new to admire or discuss, even after hours of being seated. It’s this constant sense of discovery that I find both special and deeply human.
What are your favourite flowers to work with?
It’s difficult to narrow it down to just one or two flowers, but I can certainly say that spring is my favourite season. The vibrant colour palette it offers is so inspiring—starting with the fresh greens in January, followed by the yellows in March, lilac and subtle blues in May, and culminating in the full, rich oranges and deep pinks in June. Each of these colours brings its own energy, and I love how they evolve and complement one another throughout the season.
Where do you source your flowers?
We’re incredibly proud to grow 90% of the flowers we use in our designs, carefully cultivated on our farm for each wedding. The remaining 10% are sourced from local flower farmers, although there aren’t many yet in Portugal. We also forage for unique materials that nature has to offer, which adds that extra touch of authenticity and creativity to our work.
What inspires you?
Definitely nature - it’s chaotic, yet perfect in its form, offering an endless variety of shapes, textures, and colours. I also find great inspiration in the blend of organic elements with modern touches, often found in the venue's architecture or reflected in the couple’s unique identity. Our creative process always strives to strike a perfect balance between these elements, ensuring that each wedding is a personal and exclusive reflection of both nature’s beauty and the couple’s individual style.
Who is your dream client?
Every project has its own "dream moment"—whether it's the creative vision, the beauty of the venue, or the couple’s story. The truth is, the process is always easier and more fulfilling when the client trusts us. When they connect with our approach and share a similar vision, the collaboration flows effortlessly and is truly rewarding.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Weddings can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Rely on your vendors and choose them from the heart, not just because of trends. The most important thing is to create a vision that feels authentically "you” - because, in the end, you are the true trend. Trust your team of professionals and allow them to shine alongside you.
