Sydney-based Alanis K Photography offers a combination of film, digital, and Super 8 formats. She connects deeply with couples who appreciate the timeless charm of analogue mediums and envision a heartfelt collage in motion through Super 8. Tell us about Alanis K Photography!
After working as an engineer for over a decade, I decided to quit so I could travel around the world with my 5 cameras and hundreds of films. During this trip, I realised how much I love photography, which inspired me to transition from engineering to wedding photography. Since then, I’ve photographed over 200 weddings and elopements. I truly believe I’ve found my calling in life.
What would you like couples to know about you?
With a calm presence and a deep passion for capturing emotions, I bring a genuine and relaxed energy to my work, building connections with my couples. My approach focuses on capturing in-between moments, fleeting details, and the overlapping layers of their story—not just beautiful images. When it comes to great photographs, I believe it is essential to be tuned in with people and ensure they feel comfortable. In this way, as the moments unfold, the perfect imperfect photo opportunities arise.
Where are you based?
I’m based in Sydney, Australia, and available worldwide. And I’ll be based in Italy during the European summer.
Do you travel for weddings?
I absolutely do! I’m a travel enthusiast and would love to travel more for weddings.
How would you describe your style?
I’m all about capturing joyful, natural and honest moments. I’m passionate about creating images that tell a story in their raw, unfiltered form—authentic and full of emotion—rather than striving for a perfectly polished look.
My editing focuses on staying true to colour while enhancing the skin tones. I’m not a big fan of extremely muted colours, like browned greens. I may add a touch of grain but avoid over manipulating the images. This way, I believe the images remain timeless, regardless of shifting trends.
What is your most memorable career moment?
I captured a magical elopement in Matera, Italy for three days – Sunset portrait followed by a lovely dinner with the couple, the elopement in a cave church and the sunrise vow on the third day. Every second was pure magic. Six months later, I captured their after party in Sydney – the Super 8 video from Italy was screened as a surprise for the guests, I was so happy to see people’s reaction to my footage.
What inspires you?
New experiences – whether it’s new people, new location, new décor, I thrive on the excitement of discovery. This is why wedding photography is perfect for me - I constantly work surrounded by fresh faces and environments!
Diversity – Living in Sydney, a multicultural hub of the southern hemisphere, is such a privilege. I like to think of Sydney as a more laid-back version of New York City. The cultural diversity, music, and food inspire me endlessly. It’s also why I love traveling so much!
Imperfect images that tell a perfect story – These make my heart sing! They inspire me to look beyond perfection and focus on the raw, authentic moments, whether from weddings or everyday life.
Conversations with parents or grandparents – I love those little chats with my couples’ families. Exploring their similarities and differences, understanding the people behind the wedding fascinates me and helps me capture their story on a much deeper level. You’ll often find me chatting with a dad or aunty during the day.
How would you describe your working style?
I have been told that I’m warm, calm, dedicated and very in tune with my clients’ energy. I effortlessly blend into the background, capturing the little moments that might not be noticed. I actively observe throughout the day, which is why my clients often mention my attention to detail. My goal is to capture images that take them right back to the moment and allow them to relive the day.
Building a meaningful relationship with my couples is very important to me as I’m deeply motivated by storytelling and human connection. I’m invested in getting to know them as individuals and as a couple, their personalities, their vision, and what matters most to them on their wedding day. This allows me to tailor my approach to reflect the unique energy and create photos that resonate with the emotions and moments that matter most.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I do both digital and film.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Yes, each wedding is unique and I’m happy to tailor my packages to suit.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
The analogue medium has always held a special place in my heart. I love the nostalgic charm and the unexpected surprises when I receive the scans from my lab. This is why film photography and Super 8 footage are my favourite.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
I’d love to capture weddings and elopements in Sicily, Sardinia, Southern France, New York City, Guatemala, Morocco, Ireland and the list could go on. I’m also interested in any random destination that is difficult to get to. But honestly anywhere.
Who is your dream client?
My dream client is down-to-earth, prioritising genuine celebration over pretence. They are laid-back & relaxed as a couple with a beautiful sense of styling and a love for authenticity. They value honesty and simplicity above all else. Uninterested in putting on masks, being props or performers in a show - they just want to be themselves. They trust me with my work, giving me the creative freedom to reflect their vision and bring their story to life in photos.
How do you select music for your films?
I always make time to chat with my clients about their favourite music genres and artists. After getting to know their tastes and observing the vibe of the day, I usually develop a strong instinct for choosing music that perfectly reflects their day. Sometimes we develop the playlist together, but mostly they trust me with my choice.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
My favourite advice is:
Plan a wedding that makes you excited! Choose some unconventional elements that are all things you love. Don’t worry about pleasing others, focus on yourselves!
At every stage, repeat "At the end of the day, as long as we are married, that is all that matters." That would keep so much in perspective for you, and keep you excited for the main event.
