Tell us about your business!
I’m Isla, wedding and portrait photographer based in Melbourne. I've been a wedding photographer since April Fool's Day in 2016. After witnessing over 400 weddings, I'm still in love with what I do and am truly grateful for those who chose me.
What would you like couples to know about you and your photography?
I’d like to think of myself as a photojournalist and my images as the building blocks of an unfolding story captured in good light and in detail. Those organic and heartfelt in-between moments people share with each other are the ones that make my heart sing. My goal is to capture my couples truthfully and artfully as their most authentic selves and to incapsulate those memories into photographs that will bring them all the butterflies, laughter, tears, warmth and nostalgia.
Where are you based?
I am currently based in Melbourne, Australia, but would love to shoot weddings in every corner of the world!
Do you travel for weddings?
100%. I see it as one of the perks of being a wedding photographer.
How would you describe your style?
Documentary styles mixed with a dreamy, soft, muted tones captured in good light and in detail.
What is your most memorable career moment?
Earlier this year I was invited back to a couples home after they had a baby and as I stepped into their house, I saw a wall full of pictures that I took for them on their wedding day. I got a bit emotional and thought that was pretty cool. To me personally, that trumps everything.
What inspires you?
Life all around me: people, a good poster I see on the street, colours, designers, my cats, my husband, comedy, traveling, architecture, textures – it’s all inspiration for me.
What motivates you to do what you do?
I may sound like a broken record, but my couples do. Even though I’m mostly quiet when I go out and shoot, I do enjoy chatting with my couples before the wedding to find out who they are and try to blend that into the way I shoot. And because no couples are the same, they continue to inspire me.
How would you describe your working style?
I’d say for 95% of the time, I typically hide behind the lens and quietly watch and document those unscripted, fleeting moments that unfold naturally in front of me. Having said that, I do provide gentle guidance when required - or if a couple is running behind schedule, I might step in and give them a nudge!
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
Mostly digital.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
I have created a few popular packages based on experience. However, I believe every couple is different, and I encourage them all to have a chat with me upon booking so I can customise my packages based on their needs.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
I can’t really name one, because to me every couple is vastly different. I’d rather tailor my packages to fit their needs.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
Italy is at the top of my list. But I am always happy to go anywhere my work takes me!
Who is your dream client?
A detail-oriented, kind and humble couple with an eye for aesthetic.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Be you, be true, be bold - unapologetically.
