Hannah Jan Photo is a Brooklyn-based photographer for couples wishing to move away from traditional wedding photography. Her method is based on creating natural and artistic images and she has been photographing professionally for over seven years. Hannah Jan Photo mostly captures weddings in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Tell us about your business!
In 2018 Hannah Jan Photo was born. Since then, I have photographed 175+ weddings for couples who are looking to break the mold and move away from traditional wedding photography. I’m always striving to create imagery that is natural, artful, celebratory, and perhaps a bit unique.
What would you like couples to know about you?
I am probably not unlike you! I enjoy spending time at the museums, trying new restaurants, and getting outdoors when I can. My husband and I have a one-year-old daughter so we also spend a lot of time at the playground.
Where are you based?
I am based in Brooklyn, NY. I photograph weddings mostly in the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey & Connecticut.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes! I love to document weddings in different places. I find it refreshing to be in spacious environments where I’m inspired by the natural landscape. That being said, I will never get tired of photographing weddings in NYC. After years of shooting weddings in Manhattan and Brooklyn, I feel one of my strengths is my adaptability. I have photographed celebrations in tiny basement restaurants, in warehouses, on ferries, etc. I’m even used to working around unexpected scaffolding and piles of trash. City photography keeps me on my toes!
How would you describe your working style?
I would describe my working style as comfortable. I’m not a huge fan of being in front of the camera, so this has greatly informed my approach. It is important to me that I do everything I can to create a comfortable atmosphere so my couples and their loved ones can be present in the moment and move with ease.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I shoot both film and digital but the majority of my work is digital. Interestingly, many people mistake my digital work for film. My editing style is deeply based on film so it is meant to have that special quality and timeless look.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Yes, I understand that weddings are not one size fits all and I’m always happy to work with my clients to create something that feels aligned to their needs.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
A favorite offering of mine is preview images. While I take my time to edit and curate the full gallery, I send my clients a mini gallery of 50-100 photos about 1 week after their wedding. I think it's very special to have the highlights right away which then become anchor images within the larger gallery of photos.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
I would love to photograph a wedding in Sea Ranch, California. The landscape is awe-inspiring!
What is your advice to couples getting married?
I recommend prioritizing experience and comfort not just for your guests but for you as well! Make sure you can sit, move easily, and even run in your outfits. And if not, make sure you have another outfit to change into so you can dance the night away.
