Marie Malandain is a Paris-based photographer who is captivated by fashion, travel and meeting new people. She strives to capture stories that combine authenticity and good style. Marie Malandain shoots in film, digital and Super 8 formats and photographs all over Europe - creating beauty in all that she sees.
Tell us about your business!
When I was little I used my mum's film camera that was always lying around the house. Thanks to her, I fell in love with photography. She kept putting on new film after discovering my numerous failed attempts as a child. I photographed everywhere and anything. Seeing beauty in everything.
Later, I did a Bachelor Degree in photography/video in Belgium. I love authenticity, timelessness and fashion. I like to mix all this in my reportage by bringing a cinematographic touch in my composition. My aim is to mix elegance and transcribing the personality and atmosphere of the wedding.
Where are you based?
I was born in Normandy in France, and now live in Paris.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes! Travel inspires me a lot and wherever you want to get married, I'll follow you there!
How would you describe your style?
What I want most of all is to capture the moments of a wedding day as authentically as possible. My vision is to keep the imperfections, that's what I prefer.
I work with digital and analogue photography. Why analogue film? It gives me another visual dimension: more authentic, more spontaneous, more real. Timeless colours, images frozen on negatives that reveal the present moment.
Photographing reality as naturally as possible, mixing art, reportage, pleasure and the beauty of the moment.
What inspires you?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from the great photographers I admire so much, like Martin Parr, Slim Aarons etc. The 60s and 70s has also have influences that inspire me a lot, with their pop colours and kitschy patterns. The too-much that becomes beautiful.
How would you describe your working style?
I want to be as unobtrusive as possible to capture small details, reactions and movements. I support my couples when they need me to.
My eye is attracted to the natural beauty of simple things. Making things beautiful through light and composition.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I work in analog and digital. I also make Super 8 movies.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Yes, I have predefined packages, but it is possible to customize a service according to the couple's needs!
Who is your dream client?
I love cheerful and creative couples who appreciate aesthetics and beautiful things. Who define their personalities into mixing a touch of elegance and creativity, in love with details.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Let themselves be transported on their wedding day! It goes by so quickly, so it's important to appreciate every moment. Toasting, eating and dancing, get together with the people you love the most and let go! When you're well surrounded, all you can do is enjoy!
