Tell us about Rebecca Frank Co.!
I love capturing real, raw, and true stories. I value openness and building genuine connections. This business started as a tiny seed, and grew into the most beautiful business that I don’t think I ever could have dreamt up. My goal is always to capture moments, artfully, that will last a lifetime.
What would you like couples to know about you?
When my mom died unexpectedly it changed the way that I document a wedding day. I have become painfully aware that photos and memories are all that we have left at the end of the day. I am completely invested in preserving the story of a wedding day, however that day unfolds. A wedding day that feels good will always outweigh a day that only looks good from the outside looking in (although, the goal is always both!). My main focus is my couples, and I try to guide them to have a wedding day that is rooted in an exceptional experience above all else.
Where are you based?
I split my home base between Calgary, AB and Halifax, NS.
Do you travel for weddings?
Absolutely!
How would you describe your style?
My shooting style can be described as documentary, intimate, and artistic. My aim is to tell the story of a wedding day from an editorial lens, mixing different cameras on both film and digital formats. I want the art to live in my couples hearts and on their walls for the years to come. Perfection is not a part of my process.
What is your most memorable career moment?
Climbing up Old Man of Storr in the highlands of Scotland with my beautiful couple in the wildest storm I’ve ever witnessed. We took 5 whole minutes of photos before we had to make the trek back down because the weather was so treacherous, but it was absolutely amazing. I remember feeling so overwhelmed with joy that this was my life, and that people trust me to be a part of these incredible adventures.
What inspires you?
I would say the top three things that inspire me are people, light, and lived experiences. The intimacy, honesty, emotion, laughter of people constantly amazes me. Light - the way it moves, shapes and shifts a space is so inspiring. Lived experiences through travel, art, and food will continue to change the way that I experience and document the world around me.
How would you describe your working style?
What’s the opposite of a fly on the wall? I still refer to myself as a documentary style photographer, but for me that means fully immersing myself with my couple and their people. I like being close in proximity and heart. I find that trust helps to elicit the most genuine emotion.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I shoot both film and digital. My mom planted the film seed for me when I was just a young gal, and I keep falling more in love with it every day.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Absolutely! I offer 6, 8, and 10 hour packages but I know that each day is uniquely yours and I will always work with a couple to figure out what’s best for them.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
Always film. Film always. It feels the most real, and it always brings my couples back to that exact moment. I shoot both medium format and 35mm film.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
Portugal, Italy (specifically Sardinia), and I’d love to shoot a wedding in the Northern Territories of Canada.
Who is your dream client?
Excuse the cheesiness but really my dream client is just a couple who loves each other deeply. A couple whose wedding day is more about the marriage than the day itself. A couple who values good food and drinks, their family and friends, fashion, art, and dancing. A couple who doesn’t take themselves too seriously and puts an emphasis on atmosphere.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Take your time - there’s no rush. This wedding should be about what’s true to you. Don’t let the pressure of what everyone else is doing shape your day. Have a long engagement, think about what you want for your wedding day, you have time! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - this wedding should be about the marriage far beyond the wedding day! Stay present and focused on you two as a solid foundation and you’ll have a magical wedding day and life together.
