Photographer Zara Staples shares her home between New Zealand and Europe each year. With first hand travel experience exploring the South Island of New Zealand, the Italian Dolomites, the United Kingdom and France, she loves to share her knowledge with her couples planning destination weddings. Zara Staples specialises in smaller celebrations such as elopements and micro-weddings.
Where are you based?
You’ll mostly find me in New Zealand, UK and Europe.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes, I’m usually on the move all year round.
How would you describe your style?
Documentary, like a guest with a camera, quiet, with an editorial twist.
What inspires you?
Light, connection, and unlikely combinations or attire within a wedding setting. I love gaining a perspective you never knew was possible.
How would you describe your working style?
For the most part, I was bought up by my grandparents. I was taught the names of trees, and birds and what the different types of clouds mean - so I tend to notice and observe things others may not think twice about. I would say I’m unobtrusive, I like to let things happen naturally but I will give direction when needed. I like to prompt, rather than pose people and couples.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
Film is my preference. I do shoot digital as well, although I recommend having my partner who's also a talented photographer, shoot digital, while I focus on film. It’s the best of both worlds! We also shoot Super 8 and 16mm films.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Once we have our call or coffee catch up I will send over a customised quote if I feel something different is required to my base packages.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
My handmade zines! Like coffee table art photography books, but for your wedding photos. It replaces the traditional album. I wanted something you feel like you could write in, and also customise to match your vibe and colours, that was still something super special and pays homage to film.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
I’d love to visit Korea or go back to Japan. But New Zealand will always be such a special place though, so I love being able to share this unique country with visiting (or local) couples!
Who is your dream client?
Anyone who deeply appreciates film and gives me creative freedom, I love to collaborate on new creative ideas with couples, too.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
If you don’t know what you want or maybe haven't been to many weddings, think of what your dream day (in a general sense) together would be. What do you see yourself doing and eating? Who would you want to share that day with?
This is your time to shine and do something the way you want to do it.
