PHOTOGRAPHERS | J & L Photography

Being partners both in life and in business means Juliette and Liz work seamlessly together, often reading each other’s minds, allowing the duo to stay perfectly in sync throughout your wedding day. Based on the US West Coast, J & L Photography  travel for about half of their weddings, whether that be to New England, New York, or internationally. Seamlessly blending an editorial eye and a photojournalistic approach, J & L Photography  aim to capture each wedding day in a timeless way that looks and feels true to each individual client.

Tell us about your business!

We are Juliette and Liz, and we are just as obsessed with your wedding as you are! Juliette has been shooting weddings since 2014, after attending art school with a focus on film photography. Liz worked in Apparel Buying for a major corporation before joining Juliette full time in 2020, thus creating J & L Photography. We are a newly married couple and just went through the wedding planning process ourselves. We love working with couples who are creative, have a love of fashion and design, and are down to earth.

What would you like couples to know about you?

As a newly married couple, we truly understand what the wedding planning process feels like (the emotions, excitement and occasional stresses!). and it has given us a fresh perspective on what truly matters on a wedding day. We're always focused on capturing each moment from the big to the small, intimate interactions—the glances, inside jokes, and subtle gestures between our couples and their communities—that tell the real story of the wedding. Being partners both in life and in business means we work seamlessly together, often reading each other’s minds, allowing us to stay perfectly in sync throughout your wedding day.

Where are you based?

We are currently based on the West Coast of the United States and primarily shoot up and down the coast from Southern California to the PNW. However, we travel for about half of our weddings, whether that be New England, New York, or Internationally! Favorite past destinations include Sicily, Italy, Tulum, Mexico and Paris, France!

How would you describe your style?

Using natural light and direct flash with true to tone film inspired editing, we create photos that feel elevated and editorial yet relaxed and real. We aim to capture the true essence of the couple and their wedding day.

What inspires you?

The love our clients have for each other and for their family and friends. As cliché as it may sound, watching our couples be surrounded by love on their wedding day truly inspires us and informs how we capture a wedding.

Inspiration is truly everywhere and in the everyday. We are inspired by: dappled light and blue hour, wandering art museums, our vintage film cameras, vintage 90's runway fashion, the art of food; sourdough fermentation, edible flowers, and the art of winemaking, as well as the California coast, the architecture in NYC, and our travels in Europe.

How would you describe your working style?

Seamlessly blending an editorial eye and a photojournalistic approach, we aim to capture each wedding day in a timeless way that looks and feels true to each individual client. We strike a balance of being a fly on the wall, capturing the in between and candid moments. We then hop in the mix and direct when needed, for instance during family portraits. With couples portraits we will guide you into the good natural light, and help with emotion provoking prompts that bring out your most natural selves.

Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?

We are hybrid shooters, so we shoot both digital and film: 120, 35mm, and polaroids. We include film in all of our base packages, and we also offer additional film add-ons, including Super8 videography!

Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?

We do! No two weddings are the same, so we love crafting custom packages to suit the unique needs of the wedding weekend.

What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?

Documenting a full wedding weekend is a favorite service for us. Offering full weekend coverage helps us tell the complete story of your wedding. All of those special moments - from the warm welcome party hugs, to the tears during your rehearsal dinner speeches, the wedding day, to the smiles during your recovery brunch as you recount the stories of the night before, and all the thoughtful details in between.

Where would you love to travel to for work?

Our dream travel list is so long. To name a few, we would love to travel to shoot in: Northern Italy, New Orleans, The Cotswolds, Camargue in France, and Cape Town, South Africa.

Who is your dream client?

We love working with couples who fully trust us and embrace our creative process. Our dream couples are those who want to feel present on their wedding day, appreciate thoughtful design, and put care into the details. We’re especially drawn to sentimental couples—those who exchange heartfelt notes before their first look, or sneak away with us at sunset to steal a few private moments and soak in the magic of their day. Food and wine forward couples speak our language as well!

What is your advice to couples getting married?

Our advice to other couples is to make the planning process fun. You spend more time in the planning phase than you do on the wedding day! Our advice is to make planning just as special as the wedding itself. We loved making every step of planning a date night. Set up a cheese board or order some take out, pour the wine, put on some good music and get to planning! We have also truly realized the importance of hiring vendors who fully see and understand your vision, who share in the excitement with you, and who offer support along the way.
