Real Wedding | Margaret & Tim

Tell us a little about yourselves!

We met 16 years ago in Brooklyn, where we still live with our 14-year-old cat. Margaret is a freelance copywriter and fiction writer. Tim is a professional musician and public school teacher.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We decided to get married at Hotel Delmano, where we first met. Tim was a barback at Delmano, and Margaret would hang out there with her friend Amy. She ended up being one of our witnesses, which is fitting, because she was our very first witness. Tim still knows the people who work there, which made planning easy, plus the space is beautiful.

How many guests did you have?

75.

Tell us about your outfits.

Margaret: I found my dress on The RealReal by searching “white Khaite dress.” I had recently watched Poor Things so big sleeves were on my mind. The Loewe mules were perfect because they looked both surrealist and like little 18th-century slippers. I ordered a couple of veils online but felt goofy in them. I had an idea of what I wanted but it didn’t exist—not a veil but veil-like, kind of medieval but also modern—so I worked with Gigi Burris to design a custom headpiece

.

I’m the fourth generation of Cuban women in my family to wear these earrings on their wedding day. My mother, grandmother, and great grandmother wore them before me. I stacked a few pearl earrings in different sizes alongside them for a Baroque feel.

Tim: I bought my Gucci loafers with a royalty check. My band Golem plays the wedding scene on an episode of the Amazon Prime show Hunters. Golem is a Klezmer rock band that sometimes plays weddings in real life but we also sometimes play weddings on TV. And, of course, they played at our wedding! Lots of layers of wedding are going on to acquire these shoes.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

We put the wedding together in six months. Margaret’s mom’s girlfriend group of over 50 years helped with the details on the day of. It was a no-pressure daytime hangout with music, food, and drinks. That’s all you need at a wedding, besides your family and friends.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Our wedding would not have been complete without Golem, the band Tim has played in for 19 years. One of the lead singers, Aaron Diskin, was our officiant.

Any tips for couples getting married?

We thought of the day as more of a big get-together than a presentation with specific rituals or a particular aesthetic that “defined us.” Trust that what defines you and what is important to you will naturally emerge by the nature of your existence! We had a rough timeline but allowed for spontaneity, like a first dance that we absolutely did not plan but was quite sweet and funny. Margaret completely forgot to hold her bouquet. What will be will be.

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

Parker Selman captured the spirit of the day perfectly. The photos feel like an extension of our lives in New York, rather than an anomalous “wedding day,” which is exactly what we wanted.
