Tell us a little about yourselves!
We’ve known each other 11 years, we met in January 2012 when we were 18 and 21. We dated for 2 years in college and had a pretty messy breakup. We eventually started talking as friends but we’re living our lives very much separately. In October 2020, we randomly started talking one night and ended up nonstop texting all day and night for about and week before we realized maaaaaaybe there was still something between us. I was living in New York at the time and he was in Birmingham. He was in residency and had a random week off so I came down and ended up spending 10 days here and we’ve been together ever since! We got engaged in April in New York after doing long distance for a year and a half. He’s my other half. And living proof that what’s meant to be will be, so that’s how we try to live our lives! Just putting love at the forefront of everything and believing that will lead us to the right path.
How many guests did you have?
About 70.
Tell us about your outfits.
My dress is by Lela Rose. I tried on so many dresses and I almost decided I was just going to wear a short dress, something simple and casual but my now sister-in-law convinced me to try on one more time and I involuntarily cried when I tried it on! The long sleeves and the lace were just the sort of simple, romantic vibe I wanted. He wore a green velvet jacket, which matched with the aesthetic of the dress and the location!
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
I just wanted it to feel like us! I never dreamed of a big wedding and initially, I wanted to elope so I wanted it to feel as much like that but with our loved ones around us.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
It was important for it to be a bit less traditional. I didn’t want to be walked down the aisle, so we walked down the aisle together! It wasn’t about being given away, but coming together as one! We also had a friend of ours perform the ceremony.
Any tips for couples getting married?
I think the biggest piece of advice is to just do what feels the most like you! It’s really easy to let other people’s opinions sway you and you can get caught up in small details that don’t really matter. Find your vision, find vendors who see that vision, and follow your gut the whole way through! I didn’t even want to have a wedding and it was the best day of my life!
