DESIGNER The Chemistry Collection | Rolling in Roses

THE BRAND

Rolling in Roses is a small-scale British label with a focus on thoughtful design and high-end craftsmanship, creating conscious bridal wear for individuals who walk to the beat of their own drum.

The typical Rolling In Roses bride? "There isn’t one. We dress brides from all walks of life and of all shapes and sizes. Our fabrics are gentle to the earth, our dressmaking techniques traditional and refined, our designs a blend of the classic and the avant-garde. We are not fast fashion."

The name 'Rolling In Roses' is taken from an early Patti Smith poem. Known as 'the godmother of punk', she embodies our ethos of designing for the offbeat, sophisticated, fiercely independent bride. The dreamers, the poets, the music-makers, the lovers."

THE CHEMISTRY COLLECTION

A word from the designer.

"When I was beginning this collection, I was thinking about the science behind falling in love; the physical, psychological, and chemical effects which completely engulf your body when you become infatuated with someone. The euphoric adrenaline-fuelled highs, the dopamine lust, the thudding heartbeats. My meandering thoughts and research drew me to the shapes and patterns made by the chemical formulas and molecular structures of the ‘love’ hormones: serotonin, oestrogen, oxytocin, testosterone. The hexagonal shapes found there have made their way into my designs as hexagonally inspired seamlines and angles, and hexagon shapes within hand-smocked sleeve details. The overlapping or interlinked circles seen in elemental molecular structures such as oxygen or water (without which we can’t live or love, right?!) are another motif found within the laces and embroideries I’ve chosen for the collection, and I’ve used many circles in my pattern drafting, creating half-circle skirts and circular frilled sleeves."

"I love the idea of marrying modern science and technology with romance, tradition, and ancient techniques like smocking, beading, and embroidery. These artisanal skills are thousands of years old and found in every culture on earth, which serves as a reminder that people from all corners of the globe and every moment in time are one and the same; we all get that heady adrenaline hit when we fall head over heels in love. I adore that."

"I’m interweaving these traditional techniques with the most forward-thinking innovative fabrics I could find; modern, sustainable, and earth friendly. Sustainability is pretty much an obsession for us here, and consciousness of our environmental impact is at the very heart of everything we do at Rolling In Roses; I spend an insane amount of time sourcing suitable materials. So, I’m genuinely bursting with pride to say that almost every glorious fabric in the new collection is certified as organic, sustainable, recycled, and ethical. I hope you love them as much as we do."

Designs in the collection are named after the psychological, physical, and chemical effects of falling in love. The passion, the euphoria, the rush of blood, the exhilaration. Design details within the collection include poet, lantern, and flutter sleeves, frilled cuffs and wrap-over blouses, bias-cut fluid slips and lavishly full skirts, a variety of different necklines, complete gowns and separate skirts and blouses, and the brands signature attention to every tiny detail; handmade pearl buttons, gold-tone eyelets, and tiny, delicate, hand-smocked gathers.

"Fabrics-wise we’re talking ethically made sumptuous silks, organic bamboo charmeuse satin, buttery soft crêpe made entirely from recycled bottles, organic cotton embroideries, and recycled natural-fibre viscose which looks and feels just like silk. We are so thrilled about these fabrics we just want to shout about them to anyone that will listen!"

THE DRESSES

Rolling In Roses pieces are distinguished by their standard of workmanship and luxurious eco-friendly fabrics. The brand is proud to maintain traditional couture techniques in a world where cheap and fast overturn is sometimes valued over quality and worth.

"All our gowns are individually made to order by a tiny team of seamstresses here in York, England. This small-scale production means we can guarantee the exceptional finish of our dresses and achieve artisan quality workmanship with all its divine hand-finished details. No production lines or faceless factories here; each dress is made from start to finish by one skilled maker who knows each bride’s name and wedding date, and who personally takes care of every last detail."

Beauty and comfort are the aim of the game; each unstructured piece is cut to effortlessly flatter the natural figure rather than to fight against it. No restrictive boning or scratchy, stiff fabrics - just comfort, elegance, and freedom. "We keep practicality in mind alongside aesthetics, and every dress has a wrist loop for carrying its train gracefully, along with ribbon tabs to tie it out of the way for dancing. Dancing is very important!"

"We are proud to have no size restrictions on our dresses, so each design is available in any size required. Inclusivity and body positivity are close to our hearts, and our collections include various cuts and styles which cater to all figures."

THE ECO ETHOS

Minimal impact, maximum love. "We spend an insane amount of time sourcing luxury materials which are not only divine to look at and wear, but also ethically produced from eco-friendly fibres. We use organic, recycled, locally made and closed-loop fabrics, and offer vegan alternatives to silk. For us sustainability is a lifestyle, not a gimmick; our consciousness and commitment to lowering our environmental impact borders on obsession; we consider every detail throughout our production methods, from the organic cotton thread we use for construction, right down to our elastic inserts made from natural biodegradable rubber and our organic cotton size tags. All our fabric offcuts are donated to crafters, makers, and artists so nothing is wasted, and we package our dresses in biodegradable bags, recycled acid-free tissue paper, and unbleached cardboard boxes. We strive to run our business as ethically as possible in every way. Pay it forward, spread the love."
