Tell us a little about yourselves!
We've been inseparable for five years, ever since our fateful Tinder date at a grungy pub in inner Sydney. As a low-maintenance, obsessively creative, and occasionally outdoorsy couple, you'll usually find us in our shared home office — Cin behind her 3D printer and Alex in his editing suite.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
We settled on Willie the Boatman Brewery, one of the few non-traditional wedding venues in Sydney that truly suited our needs. Located in a former Dulux paint factory in the industrial precinct of Sydney’s Inner West, it offered the large space and casual vibe we were looking for — but, most importantly, it had character.
We loved the exposed brick, expansive windows, quirky artwork, and the plants hanging from the ceiling. Having fresh tap beer on hand was an added bonus.
How many guests did you have?
Trying our best to keep it intimate, we had around 75 guests, which was as small as we could make it.
What was your budget?
We had a budget of around $20,000 and ended up spending just over that. To keep costs down, we took care of dressing the venue ourselves, mainly by creating flower arrangements and placing candles throughout the space. It was surprisingly cost-effective and relatively easy to buy all our flowers wholesale from Flemington Flower Markets.
Tell us about your outfits.
In keeping with the casual vibe we wanted, we steered away from anything overly formal. Cin wore a simple cream bohemian dress from Bec & Bridge, paired with cowboy boots she found on Depop. Alex had a 1960s-style Nudie suit tailor-made in India and found his cowboy boots at Route 66 in Newtown.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
Our only goal was to make sure everyone had the best time possible — with plenty of drinking, eating, and great tunes. We wanted the day to feel like one big celebration, so we kept the ceremony as short as possible, with a friend officiating, before jumping straight into party mode.
Any tips for couples getting married?
To future couples, give yourselves plenty of time to plan your wedding. It’s a long and often slow process, and things will go wrong — but don't let it stress you out. Everything will work out in the end. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun along the way.
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
We used Little Caterer Sydney for food, and the team, led by Kohu, were fantastic — highly recommend!
We couldn’t be happier with the quality of the photos taken by our photographer, Ed Summerhays. He listened carefully to our brief; we wanted candid photos captured in his style, and he delivered above and beyond our expectations. We were absolutely blown away.
The Vintage Stylus took care of the music for the day. They’re a group of highly knowledgeable and passionate music lovers who take the time to truly listen to your brief and curate the perfect playlist. They also bring an awesome setup, including a vintage vinyl deck that looks amazing.
