Wedding | Jayme & Dylan

Tell us a little about yourselves!

We both grew up in small coastal towns on the far south coast of New South Wales and met in high school, though it wasn't until several years later that we started dating. We've been together for 10 years now and have called Sydney home for over a decade. I’m a teacher, and Dylan is an electrician. We live a simple life, appreciating both the big moments and, most certainly, the little ones. We are incredibly grateful to have found each other.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We’ve always been drawn to European or European-inspired venues, not just because we love the continent (having recently travelled there), but also because it ties into my (Jayme’s) family heritage—my mother’s parents were Slovenian, and I had a special bond with my grandma. We were also looking for a venue that felt unique, one that would transport us to another country and offer an escape for both us and our guests. Talits Estate was the first and only venue we saw, and we immediately fell in love with its French aesthetic and charming quirkiness.

How many guests did you have?

We had 35 people, including our immediate family and closest friends. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

What was your budget?

Initially, our budget was $20,000. Oh, how naive we were! In the end, we quadrupled that amount.

Tell us about your outfits.

After being unsatisfied with the two dresses I had ordered from Net-a-Porter, my mother and I went on a quest to find "the one" just 12 weeks before the wedding. I fell in love with gowns I saw on Happy Isles, a vintage bridal and designer store in the US, and was adamant that there was an old gown out there waiting for me.

When we walked into a vintage bridal studio tucked away in the garage of Grace Corby’s home, the owner of the vintage store Art Garments, I immediately spotted a silk taffeta mermaid dress with a sweetheart neckline and low back hanging from the ceiling. I instantly knew it was exactly what I had been longing for. Although the dress was several sizes too big and the mermaid style was impractical for our day, I played around with it and envisioned transforming it into a drop-waist design with a straight neckline. Even though I am a sewer myself, I was not daring enough to alter it. So, I FaceTimed Joanna, a talented Hungarian seamstress at Sew Special in Sydney’s CBD, and she confirmed that she could make the alterations I desired. I felt an overwhelming sense of relief after finding the dress and getting Joanna’s confirmation, so much so that I cried tears of joy all the way home.

From then on, I visited Joanna every week for fittings and to refine the design, right up until the week before the wedding. Together, we drew inspiration from designers like vintage Vivienne Westwood, Loris Azzaro, and Wed Studio. In the end, Joanna made the dress fit perfectly with our vintage theme, completing the vision for the day. I truly felt it was the missing piece to our wedding puzzle.

I accessorised the dress with two sets of vintage earrings. One pair was vintage clip-on Chanel earrings from Blue Spinach, a designer consignment store, while the other was a set of vintage pearl-like clip-ons from Art Garments. I also wore vintage-inspired handmade knickers from  Trousseau with "bride" embroidered on them. I sewed my garter, my lace veil was from Madame Tulle, and my shoes were Prada.

Dylan wore a customised double-breasted suit from P Johnson Tailors. His opera pumps were from Morjas.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

Our main goal was to create a wedding that truly reflected who we are. We made a conscious effort not to get caught up in trends or traditions, instead focusing on including only the elements that felt meaningful to us. We also always knew we wanted something fun and light-hearted that also reflected our creative side.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

We both agreed on having only vintage music for our wedding—think Elvis Presley, Paul Desmond, Etta James, Queen, Frank Sinatra, Barry White, and Donna Summer. I have always had a deep love for music from the 40s to the 80s and have dreamed of having this type of music playing at my wedding since I was a child. Together, we curated a series of playlists that I was especially proud of. The music was a hit with our guests and vendors, setting the perfect tone for the day.

We always knew we wanted our wedding to have a theme. We both share a love for the past, appreciating old music to vintage furniture, art, architecture, and clothing. The theme naturally evolved after a colleague of mine did my first tarot card reading on me at the beginning of 2024. From there, we had Vanessa from By V design our wedding invites and menus, drawing inspiration from traditional tarot cards. Everything else seemed to fall into place after that. Our florist, Morgan from Valenteen Florals, crafted a vintage-inspired colour palette for the flowers. We shared a mood board with Blaise Bell, our photographer, featuring photos of couples and groups posed in arrangements reminiscent of the early 1900s. Dylan’s look was based on traditional black-tie attire, while my dress and accessories were either vintage or inspired by styles from the past.

Having our photos taken on film was also a must for us. We both love how film captures moments so naturally and authentically. With film, there’s only one chance to get the shot, and the process of waiting for the film to be developed adds an element of anticipation and excitement. It’s something our fast-paced world doesn’t often offer. Since receiving our photos back from Blaise, we have been inspired to pick up our film cameras again.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Think about the unique qualities that make you both individuals and a couple, and weave those into your wedding. Make it truly your own.

Involve an additional someone special in the planning (I chose my mother). Getting married is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is even more special when you can share the leading-up process with some of your dearest. The moments I shared with my mother during the 12 months of wedding planning will be forever cherished.

Keep most details under wraps during the planning process. Let your guests enjoy the surprise when the big day arrives.

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

We’d like to give a special mention to Blaise Bell, our photographer. He was incredibly kind, accommodating, and patient, and it was truly a joy to have him with us on our day. He fully embraced our vision and captured the photos we had hoped for. We will treasure these photographs forever.

We can’t recommend Sew Special enough for clothing alterations, especially Joanna. The transformation she made to my dress was truly remarkable.

Aplenty’s catering service was exceptional. They brought our dream menu to life, delivered outstanding service, and were incredibly accommodating to our guests. They made our day run so seamlessly.

We’d also like to extend our thanks to all of our vendors who were with us on our wedding day: Blaise Bell, Pip Best from In Light Ceremonies our celebrant, Morgan (Valenteen Florals) our florist, By Lucy our content creator, the Aplenty team, Airlie & Co, and our dear friends who helped us set up. With temperatures reaching above 35 degrees, the conditions were challenging, but each of them approached the day with energy, positivity, and enthusiasm. We’re incredibly grateful to have had them by our side, and we cannot thank them enough for making our day so unforgettable.
