Tell us a little about yourselves!
I’m British, and Nick is German. We met in London in 2014 and got engaged at Christmas in 2021, making our wedding even more special as it marked a decade together.
I (Mackenzie) work in the fashion and design industry, as a creative project manager, and Nick works in property management after a career as a professional footballer. We live in Greenwich, London and have a little Welsh Terrier called Klaus.
Nick proposed during a hike in Wales. He got a little nervous and we ended up slightly lost on the way up, veering off the trail and climbing what felt like a near-vertical hill to reach the summit. But the view was totally worth it, and it certainly added the element of surprise!
We feel so lucky that both our parents are still happily married, celebrating their 38th and 40th anniversaries. Seeing their commitment made getting married even more meaningful to us.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
We considered so many places for our wedding—London, Nick’s hometown in Germany, the South of France, and Spain. We looked at traditional wedding venues, but it quickly became overwhelming. The costs were sky-high, everything felt overly elaborate, and none of it really felt like us. At one point, we almost gave up entirely.
Then, one evening over dinner, we asked ourselves: what was our favorite meal we’ve ever shared?Without hesitation, we both had the same answer: Prosilio, a restaurant we’d fallen in love with during our holidays in Greece over the past eight years.
And so I began to plan our wedding in Zakynthos, Greece. With the dinner set at Prosilio, we knew we wanted part of the day by the sea so hired Cameo Island for our ceremony. Having the day split between the two locations worked perfectly for our intimate celebration.
How many guests did you have?
30 - including us.
What was your budget?
Between £15,000 - £20,000. Not including flights, villa, outfits.
Tell us about your outfits.
Finding the perfect wedding dress was a journey. I (Mackenzie) really struggled to find something that fit my frame and worked with the heat in Greece. My mom and I spent a lovely day in London trying on dresses, but everything felt too traditional—not me at all (I’ve never been much of a dress person).
Then, on a whim, I ordered a white Roksanda dress from Net-A-Porter, and when I tried it on, I knew it was the one. I FaceTimed my mom, sister, and best friend immediately, and they all agreed—it was minimal and understated, but the cape gave it this effortless, Aphrodite-like vibe perfect for the ceremony setting on Cameo Island.
My shoes were a group sourcing effort at lunch with my colleagues, I’ll forever be grateful to Evie for finding the perfect Toteme mules a few weeks before the wedding day! My earrings were a gift from Nick years back from a jeweler in Zakynthos. My best friend Gaia is an amazing stylist, so she gave me something ‘borrowed’ her Celine sunglasses. My something ‘old’ and ‘blue’ her Grandma’s ring.
Nick's suit was from Grand Le Mar, he opted for a light linen due to the Greek heat. He paired it with a classic A. Lange & Söhne dress watch nodding to his German heritage.
For our wedding bands Nick and I knew we wanted something simple but matching, we had appointments with Cartier and De Beers and it was the classic bands with a hidden inner diamond from De Beers that we fell in love with - it was one of the nicest days spent together with a Champagne lunch at Fortune and Mason to celebrate.
We gifted each other our wedding scents the evening before, I wore Loewe and Nick Acqua Di Parma. It was a small but intimate way to mark the beginning of this new chapter together.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
We wanted to avoid feeling overwhelmed and celebrate in a way that felt authentic to us. The most important things were having an intimate ceremony, a stunning backdrop, and incredible food.
After struggling to find a planner or stylist who could break away from tradition, I ended up planning my own wedding. That experience inspired me to start The Isle Events, specializing in intimate weddings and events in London and Zakynthos.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
As neither of us are religious we wanted a way to bring something special into our ceremony, so we decided to include the traditional Greek Stefan crowns. They symbolise purity and togetherness, it was a beautiful way to ask my sister to be part of the ceremony as she presented us and carried out the swapping of crowns.
Any tips for couples getting married?
To celebrate exactly how you want to as a couple, don't be pressured by the traditional wedding world.
It was so lovely to get married abroad in the sun, we would certainly recommend a destination wedding. Celebrating in Greece allowed us, our family and friends to make it a holiday spreading the celebrations across a week.
